We had a wonderful day at The Comic Book Shop in Wilmington, DE. We drew sketch cards for any and all comers for about five hours. What a work-out!
This gallery contains a lot of the cards we drew for FCBD, but there are many others that we missed photographing in the rush.

Happy Free Comic Book Day, everyone! We don’t have a comic book to give away this year, but we do have this cool comic book cover coloring book page to give away! Right click on the image and select “Save Image”. You can then print the page on your printer and color away.

Come see Don and Mike at The Comic Book Shop in Wilmington, DE. We’ll be drawing sketch cards, hanging out, and talking about making comic books from 11 am to 3 pm. Come get some free comics and hang out, there’s lots going on today.

Our buddy Charlie recorded the drawing of one of our sketch cards (he requested Captain America) and produced this video. Pretty cool, right?

You read Marooned, right? Because no one in their right mind would miss out on the awesome adventures of John, Asimov, Lian, Ril, and Zed - would they?
Our good friend and frequent mentor Tom Dell’Aringa made this beautiful limited edition Marooned poster. It’s 12” x 27” and printed on smooth, fine art, 270 gsm, 15 mil. archival quality paper.
This is going to look great in my office - you should get one too (click here for a larger version and to purchase details!)

Things are happening quickly behind the scenes here at Echo Rift HQ. First off - Branding.
Mike and I were ultimately unhappy with the “beta” Echo Rift logo we decided upon back in October. The size was difficult to place in a square or a horizontal space, and despite the fact that the original logo hints at a classic comic-book/science-fiction motif, it just wasn’t dynamic enough for us.
We hit the drawing board knowing that the new iteration of Echo Rift requires a better wordmark - something that can be utilized at multiple sizes and fits easily into horizontal spaces. We wanted something bold and somewhat cutting edge.
Therefore we bring you, the new Echo Rift wordmark:

And yes, there is a deliberate “fuzzing” effect on the letters, that’s not your monitor or a bad scan. Maybe this is a risky decision, we’ll see. So far, we are really pleased with it.
What do you think?

In conjunction with the soon-to-be relaunched and rebranded Echo Rift, Mike has been working on a cover for our first short, titled “Epilogue”.
In this post, we want to show not only the process of bringing a comic cover from rough sketch concept, but also demonstrate the immense value provided by critique.
The concept started here, with this rough image:

Don commented that Hurry (the Rabbitoid) was a little too cute looking, and that the camera probably needed to be panned back more.
Mike then presented this following version to our circle over at Springwinder (along with this rough Echo Rift logo that looks nothing like what we ultimately decided to go with):

Mike received excellent feedback. Tom Dell’Aringa took the image and worked it up, with his immensely helpful suggestions:

Steve Ogden, Eric Orchard, and Paul Frick also chimed in with suggestions - mostly to develop the darker areas more and some other compositional suggestions.
Mike then produced this draft for review, and everyone agreed it was time to finalize:

And… here we are - the final inks for the Cover of “Epilogue”:

We think it came out really well, what do you think?
Before too long, we’ll post Part 2, as the colors and logoing is accomplished.
Oh - and in the meantime, our friend Eric released a digital comic the other day called Marrowbones - 47 pages for $2, you can’t beat it - go get yourself a copy and tell him Garvey Connelly sent you!

We haven’t updated anything in a while, but fear not, we are not resting on our laurels! In fact, there will be a deluge of new stuff in the next week or two - a new Echo Rift logo - a new cover - and some big announcements.
Stay tuned!
